Jack Smatt the Legend
Port Royal’s history is intertwined with the adventures and exploits of the legendary pirate, Black Jack Smatt. This city’s history would stay incomplete and less eventful if Jack Smatt and his escapades are left out of the description. Smatt first came to Port Royal as a merchant trader to take advantage of the booming trade between Europe and the New World. As time went by, Black Jack grew restless with his conventional lifestyle and stepped into the more lucrative occupation of piracy.
In the period of early 1600s, Port Royal’s reeling populace was deep sunk in anarchy and loose morals. The population consisted of cutthroats, harlots and pirates and was the preferred haven for the British and European backed privateers. Soon pirates from different parts of the world flocked to Port Royal and Jack Smatt was on his way to make his mark in the city’s history pages. He grew and flourished as a successful pirate and made many successful looting operations at sea.
His most remembered endeavour was the plundering of a large Spanish vessel, sailing out of the Panama Coast. It was originally sent from Madrid to protect the Spanish Maine. An apparently massive ship of around 200 tonnes it was literally a floating treasure-house. Although Smatt’s coffers were already full, the allure of more was irresistible. It is said that when the pirates drew near the Spanish galleon, it signaled for surrender, but was cunningly braced for a fight. As the pirates approached, the merchant vessel fired its Cannons, only to miss the target due to an ill-fated spell cast on it. Had it hit the target, Port Royal’s history would have taken a different turn. The pirates promptly took charge of the ship and Black Smatt commandeered his crew to one of the greatest treasure hauls of his illustrious era.
The abandoning of rum rationing rules by the ruling crown made rum’s popularity shoot up among the riffraff. Smatt would binge on rum and made name as a rum drinker and notorious womaniser.Soon rum became an inevitable part of the pirate lifestyle. It became such a valuable element in a pirate’s lifestyle that any lack of availability would lead to conflict among the pirate crew.Smatt even concocted a blend, the jewel of Jamaican Rum; and it was rumoured that anyone who was lucky enough to lay his hands on this original blend would inherit the much-famed Smatt Fortune. This era between 1650 and 1740 was coined as the Golden Age of pirates.
In 1692, a ferocious earthquake razed Port Royal. Along with that, Smatt and many other inhabitants vanished from the city of Port Royal. Nowadays, it is Jack’s descendants who rule the maritime industry in the Caribbean waters. The man at the helm is Ernie Smatt, a former water-ski champion. He holds Jack Smatt’s mantle now and manages the business from his Cutlass Bay hotel.
