Will beach casting be a problem with a 45g Dexter wedge?
I’ve read all over that this weight of wedge casts very far, but how can it if its only 1 and half oz?
With all i’ve read and experienced with beach casting, anything less than a 3 oz weight wont get you very far. So what im asking is what makes this wedge cast so far? is it its sleek aerodynamic design or just the fact that you need very friction free equiptment and light braid to make it cast far?
As an extra question I have a 12ft beachcaster, a shakespear IN2 fixed spool front drag reel, and 20LBS monofilament line, what distance am I likely to get with this wedge in an OTG cast?
The comparison that’s been made isn’t between a standard lead weight and a spinner, its that out of most spinners the dexter wedge will cast the furthest.
Firstly you cant cast a Dexter wedge or any other type of spinner from a beach casting rod, instead you need a spinning rod and a small spinning reel with around 8-10lb monofilament or co-polymer line. Most saltwater spinning rods in the UK range from around 8ft to 11ft, these will give you the best chance of getting any distance with the dexter wedge and also the action should be soft enough to give the spinner some movement when retrieving.
Also no spinner will cast as far as a lead weight, but distance isn’t always the key when lure fishing, you will be fishing close in shore around structure, such as rocks, piers etc where fish such as bass and mackerel forage for food. maximum distance that you should expect to get a dexter wedge of a a spinning rod is 100 yards, on your beach caster, 20-30yards maximum and even then that’s being generous, so in short you need a spinning rod to get any distance with a dexter wedge. Conoflex makes some good spinning rods as does shimano, the better quality the spinning rod the more distance you will get.
