Reel Fly Line
how do i spool a south bend reel model #1140-a with backing and fly line?
The make and model of the fly reel are not important — you load just about any fly reel the same way.
Step 1. You need to “stack” your line and backing on the reel to see how much backing it will take (when added to the fly line) to fill up the reel. The fly line is a fixed quantity — you don’t cut it — so you will add some quantity of backing to fill up the whole reel. We’re not installing anything yet, we just want to measure. So, wrap your fly line around the arbor (the reel part) of the reel. Don’t tie it on, just wind it on and then reel it in. When you get to the end of the fly line, tie on your backing with any old knot and then wind in the backing until your reel is full, or almost full (I like to leave about 1/4 inch of clearance). Now you now how much backing the reel needs (in addition to your fly line) to exactly fill it up. Cut the backing off the reel. Now take it all off. Just strip it all off and throw it on the floor.
Step 2. Tie the backing to the arbor using an arbor knot and then reel it in. MAKE SURE YOU’RE REELING IT IN THE PROPER DIRECTION FOR WHICH HAND YOU USE.

Step 3. Tie the fly line to the working end of the backing using the knot of your choice. I prefer to join the backing to the fly line using two surgeon’s loops and the “loop to loop” method (see below), but you can also use an albright knot:

Step 4. Reel it all in, confirming that the line exactly fills the reel with a small amount of clearance.
Step. 5. Go fish.
P.S. Almost forgot — you need a leader on the end of your fly line and tippet on the end of the leader. I don’t know if you know this or not. Join the leader to the fly line using two surgeon’s loops and the “loop to loop” method:

Your leader will likely already have a loop in it for this purpose. Install a surgeon’s loop on the fly line by tying on a short length (6 inches or so) of very heavy monofilament (14 pound works well) with the albright knot or a nail knot:

Then put a surgeon’s loop in the working end of the mono. This will allow you to change leaders without tying additional knots each time.
